Effective Ways to Remove Rust Stains from Ceramic Sinks
Rust stains on ceramic sinks and other bathroom fixtures are a common problem caused primarily by hard water mineral deposits. Additionally, leaking rusty galvanized iron pipes can contribute to those unsightly orange stains. While the appearance of these stains is bothersome, the real challenge lies in their stubbornness. Fortunately, with the right approach and products, removing rust stains from bathroom fixtures can be much easier.
If you prefer a more eco-friendly cleaning method, you’ll be pleased to know that there are natural alternatives to the harsh chemical products typically found on the market. Here, I will share my effective and environmentally friendly solutions for tackling those pesky orange stains on ceramic bathroom fixtures.
Supplies You’ll Need:
- Pumice scouring stick
- White vinegar
- Spray bottle
- Rubber gloves
- Borax
- Cloth
- Bowl
To start, wet the pumice scouring stick and gently rub it back and forth over the rust stains on your ceramic sink. As you scrub, the pumice will start to dissolve, forming a paste that effectively lifts the stains. Continue rubbing the paste into the rusted areas until they are completely removed, then rinse the sink thoroughly to wash away any pumice residue.
Next, it’s time to harness the power of white vinegar:
- Begin by plugging the sink and generously spraying the affected areas with white vinegar.
- Allow the vinegar to sit for about 30 minutes, giving it time to break down the rust stains.
- Afterward, rinse the sink thoroughly to eliminate any leftover vinegar.
If the stains remain stubborn, it’s time to bring in the heavy artillery:
- First, put on your rubber gloves for protection. In a bowl, mix 2 tablespoons of borax with 2 cups of warm water.
- Using a clean cloth, apply the borax solution directly to the rusted areas of the sink.
- Let the solution sit for 12 hours to allow the borax to work its magic. After this period, rinse the sink with cold water to wash away any remaining borax residue.
Important! Avoid using bleach or any cleaning products that contain bleach on porcelain sinks. The chlorine in bleach can chemically react with iron, potentially worsening the rust stains instead of removing them. By following these steps, you can restore the shine to your ceramic sink and keep it looking its best without resorting to harsh chemicals.
