How to Remove Rust Stains from Your Bathtub
To effectively tackle rust stains in your shower or bathtub, you’ll need a few essential items. Some of these might already be in your home, but you may need to pick up a couple of things as well.
Items Needed to Remove Rust
- White vinegar (plain white vinegar is best)
- The Pink Stuff (available in sets or single tubs)
- An electric scrubber or an old toothbrush (I found mine on Amazon)
- Microfiber cloths (these are my go-to favorites from Amazon!)
Getting Started
Take a look at the rust stains on my shower; while they weren’t overwhelming, I was eager to eliminate them. As a first step, I recommend cleaning the tub or shower with vinegar. This helps to remove any hard water stains or limescale that may be contributing to the rust, making it easier to tackle the stains directly.
Step 1: Begin by spraying white vinegar onto all areas affected by rust stains. I typically keep some vinegar in a spray bottle for convenience, but you can also use a microfiber cloth to spread it around.
Step 2: Allow the vinegar to sit on the rust stains for 5 to 10 minutes.
Step 3: Rinse the vinegar thoroughly from the stained areas.
Step 4: Using an old toothbrush or your scrubber brush, apply a thin layer of The Pink Stuff directly onto the rust stain.
Step 5: Activate the scrub brush and gently scrub the rust-stained area for about a minute. There’s no need to apply excessive pressure; just let the brush do the work.
Step 6: Allow The Pink Stuff to sit on the rust spots for a few minutes to maximize its effectiveness.
Step 7: Turn the scrub brush back on and scrub the stained area for another minute.
Step 8: Use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe away The Pink Stuff cleaner from the surface.
Step 9: Repeat the process if necessary. In my case, I only needed to do this once, but if you’re dealing with larger or more stubborn rust stains, you may need to go through these steps multiple times. You can see below that my rust stains are completely gone!
Helpful Hints
Testing: If you’re worried about damaging your bathtub’s surface, I recommend testing the method on a small, inconspicuous area first. Once you confirm that it won’t cause harm, feel free to use it on the larger stained areas.
Products to Use: If you don’t have The Pink Stuff on hand, feel free to try another cleaning product, but I personally appreciate how well The Pink Stuff cleans without scratching the surface.
