Discover the best practices for washing and drying your heated blanket without resorting to harsh chemicals. We’ll guide you through simple steps for machine washing, while also providing hand washing instructions for your convenience. If you know me well, you understand my deep affection for my dogs! My chihuahua is practically my child. He loves joining us on car rides and accompanying us everywhere. However, the mess he creates is a different story. (Check out my tip on the easiest way to remove pet hair from furniture.) Because of the dirt they bring in, I find myself washing items like sheets and blankets far more frequently than I would if I didn’t have pets. This extends to electric blankets as well. While you may not think about regularly washing your electric blanket, it’s essential for maintaining cleanliness.
What You’ll Need
- Stain remover – necessary only if you notice visible stains.
- Mild detergent – I recommend using either Woolite or The Laundress, as these are formulated specifically for delicates.
Before You Start
- Most modern electric blankets are quite durable, but older models should be carefully inspected for any signs of damage to the electrical components before washing.
- Utilize a lint roller to eliminate the majority of debris like lint, hair, and excess dirt. A soft-bristled brush can also be effective for dusting.
Spot Cleaning
Before washing your heated blanket, it’s advisable to spot-treat it with a reliable stain remover. I have a homemade spray that works wonders, even on tough stains.
How to Wash an Electric Blanket in the Washing Machine
STEP 1: Unplug the power cord from the wall and disconnect any remaining cords from the blanket.
STEP 2: Spot treat any stains as necessary.
STEP 3: Set your washing machine to the delicate cycle using cool or cold water. Once the machine is filled, add a small amount of mild detergent followed by the blanket. If using a front-loading washing machine, simply start the washing process without waiting for it to fill up.
STEP 4: Allow the machine to agitate for about a minute, then pause it and let the blanket soak for approximately 5-10 minutes.
STEP 5: After soaking, turn the machine back on and let it complete the wash cycle. The gentle setting will effectively remove grime and stains without damaging the electrical components or heating elements.
Washing Electric Blankets by Hand
STEP 1: Unplug the blanket from the power source and disconnect any cords from the controller.
STEP 2: Spot treat any visible stains.
STEP 3: Fill your bathtub halfway with cool water. Add a small amount of mild laundry detergent and mix it into the water.
STEP 4: Submerge the blanket fully in the water.
STEP 5: Allow the blanket to soak for about 15-20 minutes. After soaking, gently agitate it for a few minutes.
STEP 6: Drain the tub and carefully wring out the excess water from the blanket.
STEP 7: Refill the tub with clean water and swish the blanket through it to rinse out any remaining soapy residue.
STEP 8: Drain the rinse water and gently wring the blanket again. If you still feel soap residue, consider repeating the rinsing process. Once most of the water is removed, proceed to the drying stage.
How to Properly Dry an Electric Blanket
Place the blanket in the dryer on a low heat setting. If you have them, toss in a few wool dryer balls to help speed up the drying time, eliminate the need for fabric softener, and reduce static. Check the blanket after about 30 minutes of drying. Remove it, fluff it up, and then return it to the dryer to continue the drying process. Repeat this check every 30 minutes until the blanket is completely dry.
Why We Don’t Recommend Air Drying
Air drying an electric blanket is not advisable because you cannot use clothespins on it or hang it over a clothesline or drying rack. Doing so could damage the electrical wiring. Additionally, I discourage laying it flat to dry, as this method could take too long, potentially leading to mildew.
How Often Do Heated Blankets Need Cleaning?
I suggest washing your electric blanket at the start of the season before the chilly nights arrive, again at the end of the season before storing it for the summer, and as needed throughout its use. It’s also a good practice to wash a new electric blanket before its first use. Always check the care tag to confirm that it’s machine washable, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for optimal care.
Can You Dry Clean Electric Blankets?
Unless the care label explicitly states that dry cleaning is permissible, I do not recommend it. The dry cleaning process often involves harsher detergents that could potentially damage the electrical elements and internal wiring of the blanket.
