DIY Natural Dusting Spray: A Safe and Effective Cleaner for Wood Surfaces

Create your own dusting spray free from harmful chemicals using just three simple ingredients that are safe for all wood surfaces, including your cherished wooden furniture. Are you ready to tackle household dust once and for all with a natural cleaner? I certainly am! Did you know that the Environmental Working Group (EWG) rates Pledge with a D for its harmful ingredients? Not only does dust create an unsightly mess and contribute to allergies, but commercial dusting sprays can also be detrimental to our health. It feels like a no-win situation! This is why I began crafting my own cleaners using natural ingredients. Plus, it’s incredibly cost-effective! Save money and avoid harmful chemicals with this easy homemade dusting spray.

Why This Homemade Dusting Spray Recipe Works

  • The oil acts as a natural dust repellent, leaving your furniture with a stunning shine.
  • A few drops of fragrance oil provide a fresh scent. Citrus oils also serve as a natural disinfectant.
  • Long-term exposure to various chemicals can be harmful, so it’s fantastic that the primary ingredients are natural.

What You’ll Need

  • Olive oil – I purchase my olive oil at Aldi for around $3 a bottle. Sometimes I buy it in bulk at Costco. Sweet almond oil is another excellent alternative.
  • Water – You can use either regular tap water or filtered water.
  • Lemon essential oil – Feel free to use any essential oil you prefer; lemon is reminiscent of the classic Pledge scent.
  • Spray bottle – I love to buy spray bottles in bulk from Amazon since we make many of our cleaning products.
  • Funnel – This handy tool makes mixing homemade cleaners easier and mess-free.

Note: Depending on the type of olive oil you use, the color of your furniture spray may vary each time. This is completely normal.

How to Make Natural Dusting Spray

Begin by adding 1/2 cup of cool water to your spray bottle. Next, pour in 1/3 cup of olive oil. Finally, add about 10-15 drops of lemon essential oil, adjusting the quantity based on how potent you want your dusting spray to smell. Secure the lid and shake well to combine the ingredients.

Using The Homemade Dusting Spray

Start with a dry cloth to remove any debris, such as crumbs on the dining room table or pet hair on the coffee table. Spray a small amount of the DIY dusting spray onto a dust cloth—my favorites are microfiber cloths. Then gently wipe your wooden furniture to achieve a beautiful shine.

What If You Have A Lot of Dust?

Since dusting is often the least favorite chore for many families, you might discover significant build-up in certain areas. If that’s the situation, add a splash of white vinegar (avoid apple cider vinegar) to the solution. This addition helps break down dust and dirt while providing disinfecting properties. For other cleaning tasks, consider making your own DIY all-purpose cleaner with a few drops of dish soap and vinegar. The lemon essential oil will help mask any vinegar odor.

Helpful Tips

  • I’ve never experienced issues using this spray, but I always recommend testing it in a small, inconspicuous area first.
  • I’m not particularly brand loyal when it comes to essential oils, but I do adore Fabulous Frannie essential oils. They offer quality comparable to more expensive brands at a fraction of the price, typically under $5 a bottle.
  • Be sure to shake the bottle well before each use, as it’s natural for the oil and water to separate.
  • If you prefer a fragrance-free spray, simply omit the essential oil. However, if you’re including vinegar in the mix, we recommend keeping the essential oil to mask the vinegar smell.
  • To minimize dust accumulation, it’s best to use a feather duster regularly and apply the spray every couple of weeks. Fabric softener sheets can also be an effective tool for trapping dust.
  • Keep the spray out of direct sunlight to maintain its effectiveness.
  • Fractionated coconut oil can also be used as a carrier oil, and it won’t leave behind a sticky residue like some other oils.

With this simple spray made from natural ingredients, you can keep your furniture dust-free, unlike many commercial cleaners. While we enjoy a good citrus scent, feel free to choose a fragrance that suits your preference or use what you have on hand. This approach not only cleans effectively but also promotes a healthier and budget-conscious home.
