Spring Cleaning Motivation and Tips

This post was last updated on March 19, 2022.

Lisa says: Spring is upon us, and it’s the perfect opportunity to dive into some thorough spring cleaning, especially with the kids on their spring break. I feel particularly fortunate; my son is already in college, and his spring break was last week, so I’m a step ahead in my cleaning endeavors. To make things even better, my mom came to visit last week, lending a helping hand as I juggle my full-time caregiving responsibilities. There’s just something incredibly motivating about having your mom show up at your doorstep at 8 AM, bucket in hand, nudging you to put down that third cup of coffee and get moving.

Spring Cleaning Motivation

Since I can’t physically send my mom over to encourage each of you in your spring cleaning efforts, I’ll do my best to inspire you through this post. There’s a unique sense of tranquility and emotional clarity that comes with a thorough cleaning and decluttering process. Despite my continuous declaration of disdain for clutter, I must admit that I’ve let it build up a bit, making the task of purging feel somewhat daunting.

To tackle this, I rely on my personal motto: “Look one way and pitch the other.” If something doesn’t have a designated spot in your home, it’s time for it to go. And by “go,” I mean it should leave your space immediately. Once I finish my cleaning for the day, I make it a point to head straight to the Convenience Center to dispose of or donate the items. If you simply set them aside in your garage or basement with the intention of holding a yard sale someday, you may find it difficult to part with them later.

Clutter has a remarkable ability to multiply rapidly, and once it takes hold, it can be challenging to reclaim your space. However, you can manage it! If clutter has already made itself at home, consider inviting a friend over to assist. Bring a bucket along; even if you already have one, having another set of hands can really help kickstart the process. I happen to own two buckets, but I must say, my mom’s bucket seems to carry a certain authority. It’s like the bucket of motivation!

Interestingly enough, I maintain a regular cleaning routine, yet when there’s someone else cleaning alongside me, the experience becomes much more enjoyable and efficient. After you and your cleaning buddy finish sprucing up your home, why not return the favor by helping them with theirs? Cleaning is always more fun and goes by quicker with the camaraderie of friends.
