What is a Shower Mist?

A shower mist is a scented spray that you apply into the water and steam of your shower, transforming it into a calming oasis. The steam generated from the hot water acts as a natural diffuser, spreading the delightful aroma of the essential oils throughout the shower space. As you enjoy your shower, you are enveloped by the soothing fragrance of the mist.

However, shower mist is not just about fragrance. When you create your own shower mists using essential oils, you gain access to the therapeutic properties of those oils. A few spritzes can help you relax, energize, relieve stress, uplift your mood, balance emotions, clear congestion, or rejuvenate your senses, all depending on the essential oil combinations you choose.

Don’t worry—I’ll guide you through the process, providing explanations and 34 essential oil recipes to customize your shower spray to your exact preferences.

Shower Mist vs. Shower Steamers

You might have heard of shower steamers; they are solid discs placed on the shower floor that release their scent when splashed with water. In many respects, shower mist is similar to shower steamers as both provide a natural way to scent your shower and create a mini spa experience. Both can be tailored with your choice of essential oils, offering therapeutic benefits such as calming, energizing, or grounding.

So, why opt for shower mist over shower steamers? While I enjoy both DIY shower steamers (you can find my recipe and instructions here), shower steamers may not suit everyone or every occasion. Here are a few reasons why I prefer shower mist in addition to using shower steamers:

  • Shower mist is incredibly simple to make. All you need to do is combine three ingredients in a spray bottle, shake, and you’re done! In contrast, shower steamers can be more complex to create, requiring practice to get the formulation just right based on humidity levels and how the ingredients interact.
  • Shower mist is not affected by humidity. You can easily create shower mist regardless of whether the humidity is 0% or 100%. Unlike shower steamers, which require specific conditions for optimal results, shower mist can be made at any time.
  • You can use shower mist immediately after making it. In contrast, shower steamers often require hours or even days to dry before they can be used.
  • Shower mist is also more user-friendly than shower steamers. Shower steamers can break or expand in storage, making them difficult to use. Additionally, positioning them correctly in the shower can be tricky. Shower mist, on the other hand, is simply sprayed into the steamy air, making it far easier to enjoy.

What Do You Need to Make Shower Mist Spray?

  • 8 oz Fine-Mist Spray Bottle

I prefer an 8 oz size for my aromatherapy shower mist as it provides enough for about a month. This way, I can easily create a new bottle and switch up the scent whenever I like.

  • High-Proof Grain Alcohol (like Everclear)

Since water and essential oils don’t mix, high-proof alcohol helps disperse the oil and enhances the scent’s longevity in the air. Look for 140 proof or higher grain alcohol, typically found in the liquor section of your local store.

    • Everclear (190 proof, 92.4% ethanol)
    • Spirytus Vodka (note: Most vodka in the U.S. is only 80 proof, but Spirytus is 192 proof. Ensure your vodka is at least 140 proof to effectively disperse the essential oils.)
    • Golden Grain (190 proof, 95% alcohol)
  • Essential Oil

You can choose a single essential oil that you adore or create a blend of several oils. Below, I will share a variety of recipes featuring 34 essential oil blends ideal for aromatherapy shower mists.

  • Distilled Water

This serves to dilute the essential oils, making your spa shower spray more economical.

DIY Aromatherapy Shower Mist Recipe

Step 1: Add 30-40 Drops of Essential Oil

Refer to the section below for my favorite essential oils and blends for shower mist. You’ll discover 34 recipes categorized by their benefits: 1) energizing wake-up, 2) calming for relaxation and sleep, 3) uplifting mood boosts, and 4) eucalyptus blends.

Step 2: Add 1/4 Cup of High-Proof Grain Alcohol

Tip: Opt for a spray bottle made from materials safe for diluted essential oils. Glass, stainless steel, and certain plastics (like #1 HDPE or #2 PET) are excellent choices.

Tip: Choose a misting-style spray bottle to ensure a fine mist; this helps the shower spray diffuse into the air rather than falling in heavy droplets.

Tip: A small funnel can make pouring into the narrow bottle opening easier and mess-free.

Step 3: Fill the Bottle with Distilled Water

Tip: You can substitute boiled and cooled filtered water for distilled water.

Tip: Leave some space at the top to prevent overflow when adding the sprayer.

Step 4: Secure the Spray Top and Shake to Mix

Tip: You can print the label on full-sheet label paper, or like I do, print it on regular paper and affix it to the bottle with packing tape for durability.

How to Use Shower Mist

  1. Shake well before each use to ensure the essential oils are evenly distributed.
  2. Turn on the shower and allow the hot water to run until it reaches your desired temperature and the shower is steamy.
  3. Just before stepping in, spray the mist generously (3-5 times) into the steam and avoid spraying it directly into your face. Tip: Aim for the steam, the shower walls, or above the showerhead instead of into the water stream to prevent the scent from being washed away.
  4. During your shower, take deep breaths to inhale the aromatherapy and truly enjoy the experience.
  5. If you’re in the shower for a while and want a scent refresh, feel free to spray again, but again, aim away from your face.
  6. Store your shower mist in a cool place, away from direct sunlight.
