Exploring the Benefits of Topical Application of Essential Oils
When I first ventured into the world of essential oils, my primary tool was a diffuser. The delightful aromas filled my home, and I reveled in the therapeutic benefits, such as lavender enhancing my sleep quality and peppermint alleviating headaches. However, I soon discovered that there are times when applying essential oils directly to the skin can be more effective, especially for issues like digestive discomfort or promoting hair health. This realization led me to seek a deeper understanding of the appropriate methods for applying essential oils topically, including when to apply them, where on the body to place them, and how to properly dilute these potent oils.
In this article, I am excited to share the insights I’ve gained about the topical application of essential oils, hoping that my journey can assist you on your own path.
Identifying the Best Areas on the Body for Essential Oil Application
There isn’t a universally perfect spot for applying essential oils.
- For a localized concern, such as a stomachache or sore muscles, directly apply the essential oils to the affected area.
- However, for more general issues like lack of concentration, sleep disturbances, or anxiety, it’s best to apply essential oils at your pulse points: these include your wrists, temples, behind your ears, neck, chest, or inner elbow. Pulse points are areas where major arteries are situated close to the skin’s surface, allowing for quicker absorption into the bloodstream. This method enables you to experience the benefits of essential oils more rapidly, akin to how plants absorb nutrients through their roots.
How to Apply Essential Oils Directly to the Skin
When applying essential oils to the skin, it’s crucial to dilute them with a carrier oil (such as coconut oil, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, or olive oil). Essential oils are potent substances, and it’s wise to prioritize safety through proper dilution.
In addition to dilution, I recommend performing a skin patch test the first time you use an essential oil topically.
To conduct an essential oil patch test:
- Dilute the essential oil (generally, 2-3 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil).
- Apply a few drops of the diluted mixture to the inside of your elbow (this area has particularly thin skin).
- Cover the area with a band-aid.
- Wait 24-48 hours to observe any reactions (such as redness, itchiness, inflammation, or pain).
- If no reaction occurs after the waiting period, you can generally assume that you don’t have a sensitivity or allergy to that diluted essential oil, and it is safe to use.
- If a reaction does occur (such as redness, itchiness, inflammation, or pain), remove the band-aid and gently cleanse the area with water. Then, apply a carrier oil (without any essential oils) to further dilute any remaining oil.
- If you experience a skin reaction, consider the following options:
- If the reaction was mild, you might try diluting the essential oil further (for instance, using only 1 drop of essential oil per teaspoon of carrier oil).
- Explore alternative essential oils that offer similar therapeutic benefits; there are many options available that may suit your needs without causing adverse reactions.
- Choose to use the essential oil aromatically instead of topically. Often, oils that irritate the skin do not provoke negative reactions when diffused.
Application of Essential Oils for Seasonal Allergies
During allergy season, apply essential oils to the pulse points behind your ears and on your inner wrists. Rub your wrists together, then raise them to your nose and inhale deeply. This combination of topical and aromatic application facilitates quicker entry of essential oils into your bloodstream, potentially alleviating sneezing and itchy, watery eyes.
Some essential oils that can help with seasonal allergies include: lavender, lemon, and peppermint.

Application of Essential Oils for Anxiety
If anxiety creeps in, massage essential oils onto your inner wrists, behind your ears, over your heart and chest, and on the back of your neck. These key pulse points facilitate quick absorption, helping to relieve anxiety and promote calmness in both mind and body. For added relaxation, mix essential oil with a carrier oil in your palm, rub your hands together, then cup them over your nose and mouth while inhaling deeply. Try inhaling for a count of four, holding for four, and exhaling for four. Repeat as needed.
Some essential oils effective for anxiety include: bergamot, lavender, and sweet orange.

This dual approach of topical application and close proximity to your nose facilitates easier inhalation of the oils, which helps to loosen mucus and clear your airways.
Some essential oils that may assist with congestion include: eucalyptus, peppermint, and tea tree.

If you frequently suffer from headaches, consider applying essential oils before a headache develops to potentially prevent migraines or tension headaches.
Note: When using essential oils on your temples, exercise caution to avoid excessive application, and keep oils away from your eyes. If essential oil does accidentally contact your eyes, do not use water; instead, dab the area with a carrier oil or rinse with whole milk to help dilute the oil.
