Do you often find yourself waking up late, rushing through a quick shower, skipping breakfast, and darting out the door? You drive a few blocks and suddenly realize you’ve forgotten your phone, your lunch, or perhaps both. Stress levels skyrocket, you get caught in traffic, and before you know it, you’re battling road rage. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to discover the secret to a stress-free morning? Let me share my journey with you. Just a year ago, this hectic scenario was my daily reality. I was trapped in a relentless cycle of stress, rushing through my routines, neglecting breakfast, and barely making it to work on time. I felt perpetually behind, as if I was constantly forgetting something crucial. By the end of the day, I would collapse in exhaustion, feeling like I hadn’t truly achieved anything.

To top it off, I worked second shift for about nine years, meaning there was absolutely no reason for me to feel rushed or late. I knew that a change was essential. It was time to break free from this cycle. And guess what? I did it, and you can too! I’m excited to share my secret for achieving a stress-free morning.

The Secret to a Stress-Free Morning is Preparation

It may sound simple, but it truly works! Some people leap out of bed, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, ready to tackle whatever the day throws at them. They seem to make quick decisions effortlessly, and honestly, I sometimes wonder if they are from another planet! However, for the rest of us, we need a moment—a glass of refreshing lemon water or a steaming cup of coffee—to help clear the morning fog. The only decision we’re prepared to make in those first 15 minutes is which flavor of creamer to use. Just thinking about all the choices can heighten stress levels.

So, let’s stop overthinking! As Alexander Graham Bell wisely said, ‘Before Anything Else, Preparation is the Key to Success.’ So, what does that entail, and how can we get there?

Start by taking a moment to list the factors that contribute to your morning stress. Picking out an outfit, deciding what to eat for breakfast, figuring out your lunch, and searching for your keys are common culprits. Your list might differ slightly, but the essence remains the same. Now, identify which tasks you can complete ahead of time. Compile a list of these tasks to help establish a smooth routine. I like to call my method “Getting Ready to Get Ready.”

By making important decisions the night before, you can achieve a significantly smoother, more stress-free morning. Think of it as your personal easy button for the start of your day. Here’s how my “Getting Ready to Get Ready” routine unfolds:

Check The Weather Forecast

First and foremost, check the weather forecast and prepare accordingly. This is a crucial step that many overlook, so let me emphasize it again: CHECK THE WEATHER FORECAST! Being unprepared for unexpected weather can lead to a truly frustrating day. Picture spending extra time getting ready for a presentation, only to be caught in a rainstorm without an umbrella. Talk about a bad hair day!

The weather can influence multiple aspects of your day, including your outfit, your route to work, and even the errands you’ll run. Additionally, it helps determine any extra items you need to prepare for the next day.

Bonus tip: If you live in a rainy area, keep a couple of inexpensive backup umbrellas in your car!

Lay Out Your Outfit

With the weather in mind, choose your outfit for the next day. This includes not only your clothing but also shoes, accessories, jackets, scarves, and any other items you plan to wear. Iron your clothes as needed to avoid a last-minute rush in the morning. Hang everything on a hook to keep it wrinkle-free.

If wrinkles aren’t a concern, simply fold your clothing and stack it neatly. Place each item in the area where you’ll be getting dressed. If you typically dress in the bathroom, set your clothes there. If your routine involves changing in the bedroom, organize your items accordingly. Lay out your accessories, including earrings, watches, and necklaces, on top of your jewelry box or dresser.

Lastly, set your shoes, jackets, hats, and scarves in the mudroom or by the door you use to leave. This way, you won’t have to make additional choices while navigating through morning brain fog.

Set Out Your Beauty and Hygiene Items

Everyone has their own beauty routine in the morning. Regardless of whether it’s simple or elaborate, it pays off to have your essentials ready. Gather all the items you’ll need, such as toothpaste, deodorant, and makeup, and set them out in their designated spots.

Place your toothbrush and toothpaste next to the sink, lay your deodorant on the counter, and arrange your makeup on the vanity. Have hairbrushes, hairdryers, and other items readily accessible. This way, you won’t waste time rummaging through drawers.

Also, lay out towels and any other essentials for your morning shower. Forgetting to grab a towel after stepping out of a warm shower is one of life’s little annoyances. Ensuring everything is in place means you’re prepared—and you won’t forget to put on deodorant!

Meals

Plan what you will eat for breakfast and lunch the next day. When time is tight, it’s easy to skip breakfast, but that’s not a wise choice. Breakfast is vital for providing the energy you need to tackle the day ahead.

According to a WebMD article, eating breakfast is linked to improved memory and concentration, along with a lower risk of diabetes and heart disease. Therefore, it’s essential to carve out time for breakfast. If cooking in the morning isn’t your thing, consider meal planning and prepping in advance.

Again, preparation is the key! Having most of your breakfast items ready and set out will transform the task into a manageable one, making it more likely that you’ll actually eat.

Lunch is equally important for maintaining your energy levels and concentration throughout the day. Determine what you’ll take for lunch and prepare as much as you can beforehand. Set out containers and utensils.

The ideal solution is to prepare your lunch entirely, package it with all necessary utensils and condiments, and place it in your lunch box in the refrigerator. This way, on your way out, all you have to do is grab your lunch box. No more forgotten salad dressing or eating your chicken with your fingers!

Travel Essentials

All your preparation could go to waste if you can’t get where you need to go. Identify and set out your travel essentials for the next day. These include items like your keys, umbrella, purse, wallet, and cell phone.

Just like you did with your clothing, place these items in the area you’re most likely to need them. For most people, this will involve a counter, console table, or coat rack near the door you typically use. Consider posting a checklist by the door to ensure nothing is forgotten.

That’s the Secret to a Stress-Free Morning

Once you’ve determined what your routine should look like, write it down. You can be as detailed or as brief as you prefer, but documenting it is crucial. Having a list where you can check off each step every night will help you turn this routine into a habit.

Mornings are usually hectic and stressful, cramming in several quick decisions in a short period, many of which can significantly impact your day. By making those decisions the night before, you can significantly reduce or eliminate associated stress.

Now that you’ve discovered the secret to a stress-free morning, what are you waiting for? Go ahead—craft your routine, create your checklist, and bid farewell to morning stress!

Is there something I missed in my routine? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Once you’ve established your new routine, come back and share your checklist and let me know how it’s going.

Thank you for stopping by, and here’s to a happy, stress-free morning!
