How to Efficiently Declutter Your Living Room

After moving a sweater to clear a spot on the couch, you find yourself rummaging through a drawer for the television remote. Frustration sets in as you survey the chaos that has taken over your living room. It has transformed into a cluttered dump zone, and you can’t quite recall how it spiraled out of control. Every surface is overwhelmed with items thanks to your entire family. Coats, scarves, dirty dishes, and magazines seem to occupy every piece of furniture. Shoes and backpacks create an obstacle course, while the drawers are stuffed with who-knows-what.

This mess feels overwhelming, and you struggle to find the energy to tackle it. After a long day at work, preparing dinner, cleaning the kitchen, and washing the dishes, all you want is to sit down, unwind, and relax. But how can you really relax when that clutter is glaring at you?

Fear not! Here’s a systematic approach to swiftly declutter your living room, allowing you to reclaim your space and finally enjoy some well-deserved relaxation.

Understanding the Clutter in Your Living Room

Living rooms often become a natural dumping ground. As soon as a family member walks through the door, clutter begins to accumulate. Jackets drape over the couch, shoes pile up on the floor, and backpacks are tossed wherever there’s space. Someone might settle down for a snack and leave their dirty dishes on the coffee table after finishing their show.

In no time, your living room has morphed into a disorganized mess, and it’s enough to drive anyone mad. Instead of sulking, it’s time to roll up your sleeves and tackle the clutter. Here’s how I efficiently declutter my living room.

1. Assess the Flat Surfaces

Begin by scanning all flat surfaces in the room. Take mental notes of the items that need to be removed. If the clutter is significant, grab a trash can and a couple of baskets to expedite the process.

Chances are, you’ll find cups, glasses, snack plates, shoes, jackets, and various clothing items strewn about. It can be infuriating to witness.

2. Discard Obvious Trash

Start with the easy stuff: trash. It’s visually apparent and requires little thought about where it belongs. Toss away any obvious garbage, including dirty napkins and stray post-it notes. Don’t forget to check between the cushions for hidden debris.

Once that’s done, gather up outdated magazines and recycle them. Your living room will already feel lighter.

3. Collect Dirty Dishes

Next, gather all the cups, glasses, and plates left over from that snack attack. If they don’t have hardened food residue, place them directly in the dishwasher. If they need a soak, set them in the sink.

It’s best to place them in the dishwasher to avoid dealing with them later, but sometimes that’s simply not an option.

4. Organize Remaining Surface Clutter

Grab an empty basket to collect the remaining clutter and reduce the number of trips needed to other rooms.

Sort items into groups that make sense for your household. For instance, if you keep shoes and jackets in a mudroom, gather them together. If there are items belonging to specific family members, create a designated stack for each person to make relocating items easier.

Once everything is organized, load it into the basket and transport it to the appropriate room. Take a moment to evaluate your pillows and throws to determine if you need all of them out. Give the flat surfaces one last look to ensure nothing else belongs there.

In just five minutes, your living room will already look much improved. See how quickly you can tackle clutter?

5. Clear Out the Media Cabinet and Shelves

Next, take on your media cabinet. Dispose of any extra cords and cables you no longer need. Those old coaxial cables and unnecessary phone cords are just taking up space and can lead to confusion.

Chances are, you don’t even own the equipment those cables once connected. Also, dispose of any old electronics accessories that no longer serve a purpose.

Now, check your shelves for old media. Get rid of DVDs that no one watches, CDs that gather dust, and video games that have fallen out of favor. Consider selling them on eBay, at a garage sale, or donating them to a local charity.

Don’t forget to evaluate your books and remove any you won’t read again. Check for board games missing pieces or that your family has outgrown. You’re only about ten minutes in, and you’ve made substantial progress!

6. Empty Out Any Drawers

Now it’s time to confront those drawers—the abyss where random items disappear. Start by emptying the contents of a drawer onto a towel on the table to assess everything at once.

Dispose of dead batteries, random post-it notes, broken coasters, rubber bands, and anything else that doesn’t belong. Keep only the essentials that truly belong in the drawers.

After emptying one drawer, you might find that only a few coasters and a candle lighter warranted keeping. Everything else was just clutter that didn’t belong in the living room.

7. Evaluate and Remove Outdated Decor

Finally, take a moment to inspect the room for outdated decor items or knick-knacks you no longer cherish. It’s time to say goodbye to that old lava lamp from the ’80s.

Also, consider collectibles, artwork, or rugs that no longer fit your style. You can sell or donate these items, giving them a new life.

Time to Relax!

Congratulations! You’ve successfully decluttered your living room, and it didn’t take all day. You’ve thrown out garbage, cleaned up dirty dishes, organized the media cabinet and shelves, emptied drawers, and even removed outdated decor. What felt like an overwhelming mess has only taken you about fifteen minutes to tackle, lifting a weight off your shoulders.

Now that your living room is tidy, take a moment to sit down and enjoy your accomplishment. To maintain this newfound order, consider establishing a daily routine for your family, encouraging them to put things away as soon as they enter the home.
