How to Unclog Your Toilet Bowl Like a Pro

We’ve all been there: you step away for a moment, flush the toilet, and suddenly the bowl starts overflowing. Your initial instinct might be to call a plumber, but that can be quite costly. Instead, you frantically search for that elusive plunger, only to find it’s nowhere to be found. While plungers are typically your go-to tool, they don’t always do the trick. So, what’s the best way to tackle a stubborn clog quickly?

After experiencing my fair share of clogged toilets, I’ve learned a thing or two and can confidently say I’ve gained some plumbing expertise! Here’s a foolproof method to unclog your toilet bowl effectively:

You Will Need:

  • Dawn dish soap (or any similar dishwashing liquid)
  • A reliable plunger
  • Hot water (not boiling)

Follow These Steps:

1. Start by grabbing a bottle of dish soap. Look for one that is safe for use with septic systems, as this will help avoid any unwanted issues.

2. Pour a generous amount of the dish soap into the toilet bowl—about half a cup should suffice. The goal here is to allow the soap to sink to the bottom of the bowl, where it can effectively work its magic on the clog.

3. Once you’ve added the soap, let it sit undisturbed for at least 30 minutes. During this time, the soap will penetrate the clog and provide lubrication, making it easier to clear.

4. After waiting, it’s time to bring out the kettle! Carefully pour some hot water into the toilet bowl. Be cautious not to overflow the bowl, as this can create a bigger mess.

5. Now, take a deep breath and flush the toilet. In most cases, this should resolve the issue on the first try. However, if your clog is particularly stubborn, you might need to repeat steps 1 through 3.

6. If the toilet is still clogged after your efforts, it may be time to enlist the help of a plunger. Fortunately, the previous steps should have made this process much easier. If you don’t have a plunger handy, consider using a sturdy stick or a wire hanger to help push through the blockage.

With these steps, you’ll be well-equipped to handle a clogged toilet like a seasoned pro!
