Last Saturday, my partner David decided to treat me to a surprise outing. He whisked me away to an exquisite Mediterranean restaurant where we indulged in a seafood feast that was simply divine. I have an undeniable love for seafood—whether it’s succulent lobsters or perfectly grilled sea bass, I could savor any of it. We decided to leave the kids with their grandma, allowing us to enjoy a perfect Saturday night together in the heart of the city.
For such a special occasion, I thought it was the perfect moment to don that sleeveless dusty-pink silk dress I purchased last year and had yet to wear. However, I feared it might be the last time I’d wear it after I accidentally spilled food on it, leaving behind an unsightly greasy stain. Silk has the unfortunate tendency to absorb grease like a sponge, and even the tiniest drop can make it look like I’ve dumped an entire bottle of oil on it.
Despite the mishap, my stomach was content with all the delectable seafood we had enjoyed. Thankfully, I have a wonderful mother-in-law who is incredibly understanding and possesses a wealth of knowledge about household tips. One of her best-kept secrets is how to remove grease stains from silk, and I’m excited to share her method with you.
If your favorite silk dress or blouse has suffered a greasy fate, don’t fret! Just gather a few simple ingredients:
- Salt
- Seltzer water
- A clean cloth
- Silk cleaner
- Gentle laundry detergent
Now, let’s dive into the cleaning process:
- Sprinkle table salt onto the grease stain. Gently rub it in with your fingers, allowing it to sit for about an hour to absorb the grease before brushing it off.
- Take a clean cloth and moisten it with seltzer water. Dab the seltzer onto the stained area to lift as much grease as possible.
- Let the garment air-dry. Place the stained section of the silk facing down on a stack of paper towels. Apply some silk cleaner to the reverse side of the stain.
- Blot the area with paper towels until the grease has completely disappeared. Afterward, allow the garment to air dry, then rinse the spot under cool water.
- Finally, hand-wash the garment in lukewarm water using gentle laundry detergent.
And that’s it! My silk dress is as good as new once again. I can’t wait to wear it out again!
