How to Remove Salt Stains from Suede Boots

Removing Salt Stains from Suede Boots

As winter blankets the ground with snow, it often brings along the unwelcome presence of white salt stains on our beloved footwear. While genuine leather tends to be more forgiving when it comes to cleaning and stain removal, the same cannot be said for suede, including popular brands like UGG. Both types of leather require prompt cleaning after exposure to snow; failure to do so may lead to dryness, cracking, or deterioration over time. However, suede demands a bit more attention and care compared to regular leather. While vinegar can effectively clean salt stains from leather boots, using it on suede can lead to discoloration, an outcome most of us would prefer to avoid!

Fortunately, there are some clever techniques you can employ to remove salt stains from suede without compromising the integrity of your boots. And no, the solution does not involve a trip to the cobbler!

Items Needed:

  • Microfiber cloth
  • Soft toothbrush
  • Cold water
  • Liquid dish soap

Step-by-Step Cleaning Process:
1. Begin by using a dry microfiber cloth to gently wipe away as much salt residue as you can. This initial step helps to prevent further embedding of the salt into the suede.
2. Take a soft toothbrush and lightly brush the suede along the salt lines. Be cautious not to apply too much pressure, as this could damage the delicate texture of the suede. Your goal is to dislodge any remaining salt without harming the material.
3. If the stain persists, mix 1 cup of cold water with three drops of liquid dish soap in a bowl. Before proceeding, dab a corner of a white cloth with the soapy water and perform a spot test on an inconspicuous area of your boots to check for colorfastness.
4. If the dye remains intact, proceed to dab the stained areas with the soapy water. Be gentle and avoid rubbing, as this could lift off dye and ruin the nap of the suede.
5. Allow the boots to dry away from direct heat and light. Once completely dry, inspect them again for any remaining stains and repeat the cleaning steps if necessary.
6. Once the boots are dry, very lightly buff the surface with a dry washcloth or a soft-bristled toothbrush to help restore the suede’s natural texture.
7. To prevent future stains, consider applying a suede protector at least once during the winter season. This proactive step will help shield your boots from the harsh effects of salt and moisture.
