DIY Toilet Cleaner

When it comes to DIY toilet cleaners, most people prioritize three main aspects: ease of use, effective cleaning, and disinfection. Vinegar is one versatile product that can tackle almost any cleaning task. I often reach for it when cleaning around the house, so it was only natural to include it in my toilet cleaning solution. Below are the ingredients you’ll need.

Items Needed:

  • Vinegar
  • Lavender Essential Oils
  • Dish Soap (I prefer blue Dawn)
  • Spray or Squeeze Bottle

Our toilets often suffer from hard water stains, but vinegar works wonders to eliminate them. For this DIY toilet cleaner, make sure to use plain white vinegar.

Note: If you opt for darker apple cider vinegar, you could risk staining your toilet bowl.

The vinegar in this homemade cleaner is effective at killing germs and bacteria lurking in your toilet.

How To Make DIY Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Step 1: Start by removing the lid from the squeeze bottle and filling it with about 1 ½ cups of vinegar.
Step 2: Add approximately 4 drops of dish soap, with blue Dawn being my personal favorite.
Step 3: Next, introduce about 5-10 drops of lavender essential oil into the bottle.

Note: Lavender essential oil not only smells delightful but is also known for its antibacterial properties, effectively combating germs and bacteria. It has even been shown to eliminate E. Coli. By incorporating it into your homemade toilet cleaner, you enhance its germ-fighting capabilities.

Step 4: Replace the lid on your squeeze bottle and gently shake to combine all the ingredients. That’s all it takes to create this DIY toilet cleaner! Just three simple ingredients for a fresh and clean toilet.

Homemade Toilet Cleaner Instructions

Step 1: Before each use, gently shake the bottle.
Step 2: Spray the mixture around the inside of your toilet bowl, using about ¼ to ½ cup per cleaning session.

Note: If your toilet bowl is particularly dirty or stained, you may need to use more of the cleaner.

Step 3: Let the mixture sit for around 20 minutes.
Step 4: Use a toilet brush to scrub the bowl thoroughly.

You can use any toilet brush, but I highly recommend this one from Amazon. I’ve had mine for about 6-7 years, and it’s still in excellent condition.

Step 5: After scrubbing, flush the toilet. You’ll be amazed at how clean it looks! Plus, the lavender oil gives it a pleasant scent as opposed to the harsh chemical smell typically associated with commercial toilet cleaners.

Do I need to use a squeeze bottle?
Not necessarily. You can use any bottle or jar, but a squeeze bottle is convenient and user-friendly. It allows for quick mixing and easy application into the toilet bowl.

Why use vinegar for cleaning the toilet?
Vinegar is excellent for cleaning and disinfecting the toilet bowl. Its acidic nature helps break down hard water deposits, ensuring your toilet stays free of stains.

Given that hard water can etch surfaces over time, maintaining cleanliness is crucial.

Will this homemade toilet bowl cleaner disinfect?
Absolutely! Vinegar is very effective at eliminating germs that may be present in your toilet. Did you know that a toilet can harbor up to 3.2 million bacteria per square inch? That’s quite alarming! The addition of lavender essential oil further enhances the germ-fighting effectiveness of this cleaner.
