Learn how to effectively clean your dryer vent with these handy DIY tips that will have you working like a pro! For years, I was completely unaware that regular maintenance was needed for my dryer vent. I would diligently clean the lint off the lint trap each time I used the dryer, but that was the extent of my cleaning routine. It never crossed my mind that more thorough cleaning was necessary! Given that I moved every couple of years, my dryers never seemed to get overloaded with lint—at least not enough to cause significant problems. However, after living in the same house and using the same dryer for about six years, I began to notice some issues.

Initially, I realized that my clothes were taking longer to dry, often requiring two cycles just to get them fully dry. Soon after, I noticed that the dryer itself was becoming excessively hot to the touch. In fact, I even scorched one of my son’s sweatshirts in the process. Eventually, I discovered that the dryer vent was severely clogged with lint accumulated over the years. This not only resulted in sluggish drying times but also posed a serious fire hazard. Since I frequently start the dryer and leave the house, this revelation was quite alarming. I knew I needed to prioritize dryer vent cleaning immediately. Fortunately, cleaning the dryer duct is a straightforward task! Here’s a simple and effective guide to help you clean your dryer vent like a seasoned expert.

How to Clean a Dryer Vent Like a Pro

If the thought of cleaning your dryer vent seems daunting, don’t worry! It’s actually a relatively easy process to tackle and can effectively unclog your vent. If this is your first attempt, you might be surprised by the array of items you find while cleaning your vent. To prevent potential fires and maintain your dryer’s efficiency, follow these straightforward tips to clean your dryer vent like a professional.

What You Will Need to Clean the Dryer Vent

  • Vacuum (any type will suffice)
  • Dryer Vent Cleaning Brush (I’ve tried several, but I currently use this one)
  • Microfiber Cloths
  • All-Purpose Cleaner – The microfiber cloths and all-purpose cleaner are used for cleaning the dryer afterward.

Since I wasn’t willing to pay someone (which costs around $150 or more in my area) to clean it for me, I opted for a do-it-yourself kit.

Step-by-Step DIY Dryer Vent Cleaning

Step 1: Begin by cleaning off the lint trap. Afterward, vacuum around the lint trap and vent to remove as much lint as possible.
Step 2: Once you’ve vacuumed that area, take the lint trap vent brush and carefully insert it into the lint trap vent as far as you can. This brush is flexible and may require some maneuvering to ensure it reaches deep enough. As you pull it out, twist the handle of the brush to catch the lint.
Step 3: If you notice a significant amount of lint on the brush, I suggest repeating this step. In the photo below, you can see that I didn’t retrieve much lint with the brush initially, but that’s because a lot of it was stuck deeper inside the vent.
Step 4: After removing some lint with the brush, you can use the vacuum hose attachment for a more thorough clean. This is where the real magic happens! 😊 I’m often astonished at how much lint the attachment pulls out. It may take some time and patience to use the attachment effectively. The attachment is flat enough to fit into the vent trap. If, like me, you have a lot of lint in your trap, you might need to repeat this step multiple times. Carefully insert the vacuum hose attachment into the trap, connect it to your vacuum, and turn it on. Most likely, you’ll hear it clog up quickly, so gently remove it, pull out the clog, and repeat the process.
Step 5: Continue repeating the above step until all the lint is cleared. It may take a while, but you’ll be amazed by how much lint you collect. Sometimes, I spend 20-30 minutes on this task. Be sure to clean your dryer lint catcher as well! You can find detailed instructions on how to clean the dryer lint trap in another article.

Cleaning the Dryer Vent Pipe

Once you’re satisfied that the vent trap is clean, you can move on to the dryer vent duct located behind your dryer. Cleaning the dryer duct is fairly simple and doesn’t take much time. Using a large dryer vent duct brush, carefully clean out the duct by spinning the brush as you push it in. Pull it out periodically to remove any lint collected on the brush. I usually don’t find an excessive amount of lint in the duct itself; most of it tends to accumulate in the dryer. The first time I cleaned my dryer vent this way, I was shocked at how much it improved my drying times. My drying time for most loads was cut nearly in half, which not only saves time but also reduces my energy costs. By utilizing the cleaning kit annually, I manage to extract a substantial amount of lint and avoid the same dryer issues I faced before.
UPDATE: I now clean my dryer vent every 3-6 months instead of just once a year, as I initially suggested. Some might think I’m overreacting, but I consistently find a significant amount of lint each time I clean it. Moreover, I’ve heard too many reports of house fires caused by lint buildup in dryer vents. To be on the safe side, I dedicate a little more time to keep it clean every few months. This simple dryer vent cleaning hack is invaluable! It’s also much more economical than hiring someone to clean my dryer vents. You don’t need to be a seasoned DIYer to tackle this DIY dryer vent cleaning project. Following these tips on how to clean your dryer vent like a professional will help you save both time and money!

Can dryer vent cleaning be done by the homeowner with a kit?

Yes, cleaning a dryer vent at home with a kit is straightforward. You can find affordable kits on Amazon and clean your dryer vent in under an hour. After years of use, I had to replace my first dryer vent kit, and I now use the Lint Lizard Dryer Vent Kit. You can see which kit I recommend here.

Why is my dryer so slow to dry clothes?

Your dryer vent can accumulate lint over time, which may clog your dryer and slow down the drying process. Regularly cleaning your dryer vent every 6 months or so will help ensure your clothes dry efficiently and prevent potential fire hazards.

Can a dryer really cause a house fire?

Absolutely! You should never leave your dryer running while you sleep or when you’re not at home. Dryers can easily ignite a house fire. Using a cleaning kit every 6 months to clean your dryer vent can significantly reduce the risk of a fire and keep your dryer from overheating.

How to blow out a dryer vent?

You can use a leaf blower to easily blow out the pipe from the dryer vent. Insert the leaf blower into the dryer vent duct that leads to the outside and turn it on. Let it blow for about 30 seconds, turn it off, and check outside to see if debris has been blown out. You can repeat this until the vent runs clean. While it’s not as effective as using a duct brush, it can help keep it somewhat clean.

How often are you supposed to clean your dryer vent?

I recommend cleaning your dryer vent every 3-6 months. It’s astonishing how quickly debris can accumulate in the dryer vent. Make sure to include this simple task on your quarterly cleaning checklist!
