Why It’s Important To Clean Your Humidifier
Regularly cleaning your humidifier is essential for several reasons. First and foremost, it helps extend the life of the device. Mineral deposits can accumulate on various components, potentially leading to malfunctions or complete breakdowns. Additionally, while humidifiers are designed to add moisture to the air, the constant humidity can create a perfect breeding ground for mold and mildew. This moisture can also facilitate rapid bacterial growth. Therefore, maintaining a clean humidifier is crucial for both your health and the longevity of the appliance.
The Best Way To Clean Humidifiers
Before diving into the cleaning process, it’s always best to check if your specific humidifier model comes with cleaning instructions from the manufacturer. If, like me, you’ve misplaced those instructions, don’t worry! Just follow the steps below.
Items Needed to Clean a Humidifier:
- White Vinegar: Plain white vinegar is ideal for this task.
- Water: Fresh, clean water is essential.
- Drying Mat: An old towel or drying mat will work perfectly.
As you can see in the images, my humidifier had significant buildup. Its design makes it difficult to access certain areas for cleaning. Over the course of winter, this buildup can worsen, leading to large chunks clogging the small openings.
Steps to Clean a Humidifier
To begin, make sure to empty out any remaining water in your humidifier.
Step 1: Pour a couple of cups of fresh water into the humidifier. Avoid filling it to the top; adding about 2-3 cups should suffice for operation.
Step 2: Add 1 cup of vinegar to the water inside the tank. The vinegar serves two main purposes: it dissolves any deposits sticking to the humidifier components and eliminates bacteria and germs. This method is highly effective for cleaning your humidifier, ensuring both buildup and germs are addressed.
Step 3: Allow the humidifier to run for approximately one hour with the vinegar-water mixture.
Note
It might emit a slight vinegar scent during operation, but it should not be overpowering.
Step 4: After an hour of running, unplug the humidifier and let it cool down.
Step 5: Once it has cooled, check to see if all the buildup has vanished. If any residue remains, allow it to run for another hour or until the buildup is completely removed.
Step 6: Rinse all components thoroughly and scrub the tank if necessary. You’ll notice that all the buildup should be completely eliminated.
Step 7: Let the parts air dry overnight to ensure everything is thoroughly dried inside and out.
Step 8: Once the humidifier is entirely dry, you can reassemble it and store it away for the season. I take comfort in knowing that my humidifier is clean and devoid of any bacteria.
