Granite countertops are not only a stunning feature in any kitchen, but they can also fall victim to hard water stains. Discover how to safely and effectively eliminate these unsightly stains from your granite surfaces with these expert tips and tricks.

I absolutely adore my granite countertops. They are typically easy to care for and provide a beautiful aesthetic! Several years ago, I began crafting my own homemade granite cleaner, which I still cherish! It’s simple to make and leaves my countertops gleaming. However, it has trouble tackling hard water stains. The hard water stains on my granite were becoming increasingly frustrating. I first noticed them near the soap dispenser and faucet. Whenever we washed our hands or did dishes, we would leave behind small droplets of water. Over time, these tiny drips developed into a noticeable water stain on the granite. While I usually have a solid method for addressing hard water issues, I quickly learned that using vinegar on granite is a definite no-no. After some research, I finally discovered an easy solution for removing water stains from granite. If you’re also fed up with those stubborn stains, check out this simple tip. Below, you’ll find a guide on how to remove dark water stains from granite.

How To Clean Water Stained Granite

To begin, I strongly recommend testing your granite in an inconspicuous area first before applying this method to your hard water stain. I’ve successfully used this technique for the past 3-4 years without any issues, but it’s important to note that not all granite is the same.

Items Needed:

  • Bar Keepers Friend (available for purchase online)
  • Microfiber Cloths (I highly recommend these from Amazon)
  • Q-tip or soft-bristled brush

Note: If you’re hesitant about using Bar Keepers Friend, baking soda can be a viable alternative. It’s mildly abrasive and can assist in removing water spots. Yes, you’ll be applying Bar Keepers Friend to your countertop to tackle those water spots, so let’s clarify…

Is Bar Keepers Friend Safe on Granite?

I initially learned about using Bar Keepers Friend from William-Sonoma, where their website indicated it was effective for eliminating hard water stains, prompting me to order a can. Recently, however, my newer cans have not specifically stated that they are safe for granite. Nevertheless, I continue to use them due to my long-standing positive experience. Just remember to test in a small area that is not immediately visible. The area around a faucet is an excellent spot to try it out. As you can see below, my granite had developed some significant water stains. It was so dull that it lost its shine completely, especially around the faucet area.

Step By Step Instructions For Removing Water Stains

Step 1: Test in a small area as previously mentioned.
Step 2: Dampen a small microfiber cloth.
Step 3: Apply a small amount of Bar Keepers Friend to the damp microfiber cloth.
Step 4: Gently rub the hard water stain with the Bar Keepers Friend.

Note

You shouldn’t have to exert too much effort. A light rub for about 20 seconds should suffice.

Step 5: Rinse the microfiber cloth and wipe down the area.

Tip

If you’re working around a faucet, a small Q-tip can be particularly useful for cleaning tight spaces.

Step 6: Ensure all powder residue is thoroughly removed from the granite. I sometimes prefer to use a little dish soap to ensure that all Bar Keepers Friend is washed away.
Step 7: After removing all cleaner from the granite, use a dry microfiber cloth to dry the surface.

Repeat If Granite Still Has Hard Water Stains

If the water stain on your granite persists, you might need to repeat the process one more time. Simply apply a bit more Bar Keepers Friend and gently rub for another 20 seconds. Afterward, clean off the microfiber cloth and wipe down the countertop. Once cleaned, your granite should be bright and shiny once more! Ensure you rinse off all cleaner thoroughly and dry the surface with a dry microfiber cloth.

Causes Of Water Stains On Granite

What causes these hard water stains on your granite and solid surface countertops? Calcium, limescale, and magnesium found in your water can accumulate on your countertops. These mineral deposits often arise when the sealant isn’t properly maintained. Since granite is porous, the minerals and water can seep into the granite, leading to those unsightly stains.

Maintaining And Sealing Granite To Prevent Future Stains

Now that your granite is clean, you might want to consider resealing it to avoid future stains. Most granite countertops should be sealed every 2-3 months. It’s an easy process you can do yourself, and it won’t cost a fortune. For detailed step-by-step guidance on sealing granite, check out my instructional articles.
