Overcoming Redundancy and Discovering a New Path
Experiencing redundancy can feel overwhelming and destabilizing, yet it also opens doors to unexpected opportunities. For Nigel Colson, owner of Ovenclean Swindon, redundancy became a catalyst for a complete career transformation. After being laid off from his role as Regional Manager in the home furnishings sector, Nigel chose to pursue a fresh direction rooted in franchising.
Having faced the shock of redundancy, Nigel sought a professional environment that was customer-centric and dynamic. His goal was to find a business model that allowed him to be active outside an office setting, engaging directly with clients. Initially, he grappled with uncertainty about how to launch a new venture and where to find reliable business advice.
To explore viable options, Nigel and his wife began researching businesses that could be operational immediately. Their search led them to attend the Franchise Exhibition, which proved to be an inspiring experience. Nigel recalls, “Franchising seemed aligned with what we wanted — a proven business model with support and independence. I was eager to start earning right away, and my wife was interested in being involved in the management side.”
Following the exhibition, they met with several franchise opportunities, but none truly resonated. Nigel shares, “Some of the businesses we encountered didn’t match our values, and a few felt too pushy in their sales approach. We wanted a partnership built on trust and shared vision.”
Discovering Ovenclean and Making the Transition
Their breakthrough came when they discovered Ovenclean online. Intrigued, they arranged to meet the franchise’s Head Office team and attended an open day. Nigel describes that experience: “The enthusiasm and professionalism of the support team were inspiring. They demonstrated genuine passion for helping franchisees succeed, which gave us confidence that this was the right choice.”
Post-visit, Nigel and his wife committed to thorough research. They connected with multiple Ovenclean franchisees to gain firsthand insights into daily operations. Nigel even spent an entire day shadowing a local franchisee, immersing himself in the business environment to understand the practicalities involved.
He reflects, “The more I learned, the more convinced I was that Ovenclean offered everything I was looking for. By 2016, we took the plunge and purchased the Ovenclean franchise in Swindon. It’s been an incredible journey since then.”
Comprehensive Support and Business Launch
Nigel highlights the intensive training and ongoing support he received: “During the first two weeks, I engaged in comprehensive on-the-job training alongside my business mentor. The head office team guided us through a successful launch, resulting in immediate leads. On the very first day of training, we were fully booked for the next three weeks.”
While challenges are part of any new venture, Nigel’s determination combined with the franchise support system helped him thrive. He admits, “The initial six months were tough—I sometimes felt out of my depth. But I knew I had to turn this into a success story, not just for myself but for my family. The encouragement from the franchise team kept me motivated.”
Nigel’s advice for aspiring entrepreneurs facing redundancy is clear: “Success in franchising demands dedication, strategic planning, and consistent marketing efforts. Whether through local advertising, flyers, or social media, it’s essential to stay proactive. If one approach doesn’t generate results, try something new. The satisfaction of happy customers makes it all worthwhile.”
Building a Flourishing Business and Looking Ahead
Since establishing his franchise in 2016, Nigel has worked diligently to develop a loyal customer base in Swindon. He explains, “Providing high-quality work, maintaining professionalism, and responding promptly to inquiries have been key. Customers appreciate quick, personalized responses, which foster trust and repeat business.”
What began as a response to redundancy has evolved into a rewarding self-employment journey. Nigel emphasizes, “Being your own boss is both fun and fulfilling. It requires support from loved ones, but the independence and satisfaction of building something meaningful make it all worthwhile.”
