Transform Your Space: A Step-by-Step Cleaning Guide

Transform Your Space: A Step-by-Step Guide

This week, we’re not focusing on an entire room but rather a specific space in your home that could use some attention. Every home is unique, and whether you live in a cozy apartment with a small kitchen nook or a spacious open floor plan, the goal is to take control of that area and make it shine. By now, you’re probably familiar with the routine, so grab your earbuds and prepare your favorite audio entertainment, or gather your family to make a cleaning plan. Don’t forget to round up your supplies; they’ll be similar to what you’ve used in previous weeks. However, consider adding paste wax if you want to give a wooden table that extra bit of love—especially if it’s been a while since it received some TLC. (Refer to the section on cleaning an extra grimy table for more details.)

Gather Your Cleaning Tools

  • A vacuum with a soft bristle attachment and an edge tool for carpets
  • Window cleaner paired with paper towels or newspaper
  • Wood furniture polish and an applicator rag or paste wax
  • A sturdy stepladder or chair
  • A screwdriver (either standard or Phillips head) for minor adjustments, like removing a light globe or tightening loose fixtures you discover while cleaning
  • Appropriate floor cleaner for tile or hardwood surfaces
  • Dilute degreaser for tougher grime
  • If you suffer from allergies, grab a mask. We’re about to stir up some dust, and you’ll appreciate the effort later on!

Clear the Space to Work

In many households, flat surfaces often become dumping grounds for miscellaneous items. Your first task is to clear the clutter. Find a permanent spot for every item that’s temporarily residing on your table or other flat surfaces. Remember, our approach is top to bottom, left to right, and wet to dry. This method ensures we effectively knock dust down and eliminate it, preventing it from settling on damp surfaces and undoing our hard work.

Start with the Light Fixtures

Now that your surfaces are clear, begin by cleaning your light fixtures or ceiling fan. Make sure to wipe down the light globes and replace any dead or missing bulbs. Many people adapt to living in dimly lit spaces; however, you’ll truly appreciate the brightness when it returns. Every time I mention this task, I’m reminded of a lovely story by Dr. Bertice Berry, one of my favorite Instagram personalities. It’s a beautiful reminder to let the light into our lives, and there’s no better time than when tackling your cleaning tasks.

Dust from Top to Bottom

With your light fixtures sparkling, it’s time to tackle the dust. Start by knocking down any cobwebs and dusting the tops of tall furniture, such as china cabinets or bookshelves. Dust any drapes or, if needed, remove them for cleaning. Utilize the soft bristle attachment on your vacuum for this step. If you have blinds, dust them and then open them fully. Don’t forget to wash your windows if applicable. Continue dusting picture frames and artwork. If you have furniture like a buffet or china cabinet, dust and organize these items, working from left to right.

Next, thoroughly clean your dining table and chairs. The approach will vary based on the material of your table and the nature of your household. If you have small children, be prepared—it may take a while! Chair slats can be particularly troublesome, but the soft bristle attachment on your vacuum can help remove most crumbs trapped inside. As you clean, take a moment to inspect the legs of your table. While you’re down there, check the underside for any surprises, like gum left behind by curious little hands. If you find any, scrape it off diligently.

Finish with the Floors: Dry to Wet

Now, let’s move on to the baseboards. Use the soft bristle attachment to clean them, and if you have carpeting, follow up with a crevice tool. If the baseboards are particularly grimy, a rag with a diluted degreaser will work wonders. Once you’ve finished with the baseboards, rehang any curtains or drapes. If you have carpeting or rugs, vacuum them thoroughly. Finally, for tile, linoleum, or wood floors, sweep and damp mop as appropriate for your specific flooring type.

Congratulations! You’ve just completed week six of your cleaning journey, and you’re over a third of the way through! Your home should feel noticeably different by now, and it’s time to take a moment to appreciate your hard work. Reflect on what you’ve accomplished thus far:

  • A Deep Decluttering Kick-Off
  • A Kitchen Deep Clean
  • A Bathroom Deep Clean
  • A Deep Clean of Your Bedroom
  • Your Family Room has been Deep Cleaned

And today, you’ve tackled the dining room/area. These are the major areas found in most homes. If you stick to the chore routine linked to that sticky note above, maintaining these spaces will become manageable without requiring Herculean effort. Remember, good habits make lighter work, and while it may be annoying, it’s undeniably true.

See you next week!
