Summer Skin Care: The Magic of After-Sun Spray
This summer, my daughter and I have been embracing the sun with enthusiasm, yet we’ve also discovered the importance of protecting our fair skin. As a redhead and the mother of a strawberry blonde, we both relish our time at the beach and in our neighborhood pool. However, the sun’s rays often seem to have a different agenda, sometimes leaving us with irritated skin. Despite our diligent application of sunscreen year-round, we’ve found that additional care is essential during the hot summer months. This is where our beloved homemade after-sun spray comes to the rescue.
Crafted from natural ingredients, this spray soothes skin irritations and rejuvenates the complexion. For an indulgent experience, I highly recommend storing it in the refrigerator. The refreshing coolness of the spray feels heavenly on sun-kissed skin after a long, hot day! I believe you’ll love this homemade after-sun spray as much as we do. What’s Inside the After-Sun Spray?
This rejuvenating spray is composed of simple, natural ingredients that you likely have at home:
- Witch hazel
- Aloe vera gel
- Vitamin E oil
- Fractionated coconut oil (or another carrier oil)
- Essential oils
Why These Ingredients Matter
Each ingredient plays a vital role in soothing and restoring your skin:
- Witch hazel: Refreshes and calms the skin, alleviating itching and minimizing the chances of peeling or flaking.
- Aloe vera gel: Provides deep hydration, reduces signs of aging, soothes irritated skin, and helps diminish inflammation.
- Vitamin E oil: A potent antioxidant that combats premature aging while revitalizing and restoring dehydrated skin.
- Fractionated coconut oil: An excellent moisturizer that nourishes the skin.
- Lavender essential oil: Known for its calming properties, it helps soothe skin irritations and promotes skin rejuvenation.
- Peppermint essential oil: Offers a refreshing cooling sensation. However, use it sparingly as it can irritate already sensitive skin.

How to Use Your After-Sun Spray
Although it can be stored at room temperature, we find it particularly refreshing when chilled. Keep a bottle in the refrigerator or create after-sun ice cubes by pouring the mixture into a silicone ice cube tray and freezing it overnight. After a fun day in the sun, spray the cooled mixture onto your skin, avoiding the eye area. Gently massage it into your skin, and remember to reapply a couple of times throughout the day for optimal relief.
