Sal Suds (available here)
Sal Suds is a concentrated cleaner crafted from plant-based surfactants that effectively eliminate grease and grime, while remaining gentle on the skin. I transitioned from using liquid Castile soap to Sal Suds a couple of years ago after realizing how much better it performed. Unlike Castile soap, Sal Suds is a detergent, which means it works significantly better for washing dishes (and laundry). It is equally effective in both hard and soft water, providing a clean rinse without residue.
Sal Suds produces more bubbles, excels at cutting through grease and stuck-on food, and rinses easily (even in hard water). What does this mean? Your dishes will be squeaky clean, silverware will shine, and glasses will sparkle.
-
Water
Water is used to dilute the Sal Suds, extending the life of the dish soap and reducing costs. For best results, use distilled water or boiled and cooled filtered water.
-
Baking Soda
Adding baking soda to dish soap may seem unusual, but it actually enhances the formula. It provides a bit of scouring power to tackle stuck-on food, while still being gentle on glassware and dishes.
-
Essential Oil
Essential oils not only impart a delightful fragrance but also possess antimicrobial properties that enhance the cleaning efficacy of the dish soap.
How to Create Your Natural Dish Soap
Step 1: Pour 1 cup of Sal Suds (get it here) into a glass bowl.
Step 2: Add 1 cup of water.
(I prefer using distilled water or filtered water that has been boiled and cooled.)
Step 3: Add 1 teaspoon of baking soda.
Step 4: Incorporate 20 drops of essential oil.
For example, you might use 12 drops of lavender essential oil and 8 drops of rosemary essential oil.
Step 5: Use a whisk to mix the ingredients until the baking soda is fully dissolved.
Step 6: Pour the mixture into a bottle—either a cruet like this or a mason pump like this works wonderfully.
Using Your Homemade Dish Soap
- Add 1-2 pumps of dish soap to the sink.
- Fill the sink about halfway with hot water.
- Add dishes to the bubbly water.
- If dishes are particularly greasy or have stuck-on food, allow them to soak in the hot soapy water for a few minutes before scrubbing.
- Wash as you normally would.
- Rinse with clean water.
- Dry the dishes, either by air drying or using a towel—both methods work well with this soap.
