There’s truly nothing quite like indulging in a warm bath after a long and exhausting day. It’s an excellent way to unwind and let the stresses of the day simply melt away. If you share my passion for baths, you likely have an impressive collection of bath salts and bath bombs to enhance your bathing experience. However, have you ever considered trying something different—like homemade bath oil?

This isn’t just any bath oil; it’s a delightful concoction that:

  • Transforms your bath water into vibrant shades of red, orange, yellow, green, or blue.
  • Engulfs you in the refreshing aroma of essential oils, tailored to your personal preferences.
  • Soothes dry winter skin, leaving it feeling silky, moisturized, and incredibly smooth.

Sounds fabulous, right? You can make some for yourself and create additional bottles to give as thoughtful Christmas gifts. These charming Christmas bath oil ornaments make the ideal holiday presents. Who wouldn’t appreciate a little self-care? You can offer a single ornament or a complete set of all five for a season filled with bathing bliss. You could also pair the scented bath oil with other delightful DIY essential oil projects to create a luxurious spa gift that’s perfect for nearly everyone on your holiday shopping list.

Mix and match your spa bundle with bubbly bath salts, a delectable sugar scrub reminiscent of Christmas cookies, invigorating peppermint & charcoal soap, and soft, silky whipped body butter. Regardless of how you choose to gift them, these delightful homemade bath oils are sure to be a hit!

Benefits of Bath Oil

  • Bath oil moisturizes and alleviates dry, itchy skin, leaving it feeling soft and silky smooth.
  • Creating your own bath oil allows you to select your preferred essential oils, ensuring that you enjoy the therapeutic benefits that resonate with you. Choose from options like relaxation, mood enhancement, muscle relief, respiratory clarity, rejuvenation, and more.
  • Diluting essential oils in a carrier oil, such as bath oil, not only makes them safe for use but also enhances their effectiveness.
  • Using a bath oil that combines a carrier oil with alcohol ensures that the carrier oil, essential oil, and color disperse evenly throughout the water instead of merely floating on the surface, which commonly occurs when only using a carrier oil and essential oil. Remember, oil and water do not mix; they require the presence of a dispersant (like alcohol) to combine effectively.
  • Lastly, a hot bath serves as a wonderful way to unwind and alleviate stress.

Step-by-Step Guide to Making Bath Oil Ornaments

Step 1: Prepare Your Ornament

If you want to present your scented bath oil in a charming container for Christmas gifts, consider using clear Christmas lightbulb ornaments. Begin by removing the top of the ornament.

Step 2: Determine the Capacity of Your Container

Tip: If you opt for the same lightbulb ornaments that I used, which are 100mm (4 inches) long, they hold slightly more than 1/3 cup of bath oil. If you prefer smaller ornaments, feel free to use them or place the bath oil in a small mason jar or another container. To find out how much bath oil your ornament/container can hold, fill it nearly to the top with water and then pour that water into a measuring cup. This measurement will indicate how much bath oil to prepare for each ornament or jar.

Step 3: Measure the Bath Oil

Pour slightly more than 1/3 cup of bath oil into each paper cup.

Tip: Slightly more than 1/3 cup is the amount needed for the Christmas lightbulb ornaments I used. Adjust as necessary if you’re using a different container. One bottle of bath oil yields enough for five large ornaments (each providing enough for 2-5 baths, depending on tub size). Ensure each ornament has its own paper cup, as you’ll add essential oil and colorant to each cup in subsequent steps. If you prefer uniform scent and color, you can use one larger bowl instead of individual cups. I’m creating red, orange, yellow, green, and blue bath oils with distinct scents, so I’m using five cups (one for each ornament).

Step 4: Add Soap Colorant (Optional)

Tip: I enjoy colorful bath water for its fun factor. However, this step is optional. If you’re not using a bath oil containing alcohol or another dispersant, skip this step. Without a dispersant, the colorant may stick and stain both skin and tub. Here are starting amounts for colorants:

  • Red: 3 drops red
  • Orange: 1 drop red + 2 drops yellow
  • Yellow: 4 drops yellow
  • Green: 2 drops blue + 3 drops yellow
  • Blue: 3 drops blue

Step 5: Incorporate Essential Oils

Tip: Aim for 10-20 drops of essential oil per 1/3 cup of bath oil. Below are some of my favorite essential oil blends for use in bath oil:

  • Red: Candy Cane = 8 drops peppermint + 4 drops vanilla
  • Orange: Gifts of the Magi = 4 drops frankincense + 2 drops myrrh + 6 drops orange
  • Yellow: Sugar Cookie = 15 drops vanilla
  • Green: Oh, Christmas Tree = 4 drops Siberian fir + 2 drops spruce + 6 drops cedarwood
  • Blue: Immune Support = 4 drops eucalyptus + 4 drops lavender + 2 drops tea tree + 2 drops peppermint

Step 6: Mix and Adjust

Stir the mixture well and adjust the color if necessary.

Step 7: Assemble the Ornament Tops

Remove the clip or ribbon attached to the ornament top as you won’t need it.

Step 8: Create an Assembly Line

Arrange the ornaments in paper cups or small mason jars to hold them securely for easier pouring and capping in the next steps.

Step 9: Pour the Bath Oil

Squeeze the side of the paper cup together to form a spout and pour the bath oil into the ornaments.

Tip: If using small bowls instead of paper cups, a funnel will simplify this step.

Step 10: Seal the Ornament Tops

Tip: Ensure the tops of the ornaments are clean and dry for optimal duct tape adhesion. Place a square of duct tape over each ornament top and press it down around the neck to create a tight seal. Trim any excess duct tape with scissors or a craft knife.

Step 11: Add Extra Leak Protection

Tip: For an added layer of security, wrap a rubber band tightly around the duct tape to prevent any leakage. This can be easily removed when it’s time to use the bath oil.

Furthermore, I added two pieces of duct tape over the rubber bands, rolling them sticky side out. Adhere them around the rubber bands and then place the ornament cap on top. This step is crucial, as it keeps the caps securely in place until you’re ready to use the bath oil.

Step 12: Create the Ornament Hanger

Tip: Cut a piece of red & white twine about 12 inches long. Wrap the twine around the neck of the ornament and double knot it. Form a loop about 3 inches long and secure it with another double knot.

Using Your Bath Oil

  • Add bath oil to warm, running bath water.
  • Use 1 tablespoon of bath oil for a standard-sized tub and 2-3 tablespoons for larger soaking tubs.
  • Agitate the water with your hands to help the bath oil blend into the bath.
  • Relax and soak in the soothing water.
  • Exercise caution when exiting the tub, as the bath oil can make the surface slippery.
  • Gently pat your skin dry with a soft towel.
  • If you desire extra hydration, follow up with my homemade whipped body butter.
