Revitalize Your Skin with DIY Acne Facial Tabs

Even as an adult, I still experience occasional acne flare-ups. Sometimes, they manifest as small red bumps, while other times, it’s full-fledged pimples. Hormonal changes seem to be the primary culprit behind my breakouts, but I also contend with other triggers such as sleeping with makeup on, stress, and certain foods. Currently, I’m dealing with a frustrating combination of a hormonal breakout on my chin and a few pesky red bumps on my cheeks, likely due to the indulgent holiday treats I’ve been enjoying. It’s high time I give my skin some much-needed TLC. To tackle this, I’ve concocted a batch of these soothing acne facial tabs. This recipe is inspired by Lush’s Tea Tree Tabs, combining the antibacterial and calming properties of tea tree essential oil with the deep cleansing power of steam. Simply drop 1-2 of these homemade tabs into a bowl of hot water, lean over the bowl with a towel draped over your head to trap the steam, and let the magic happen. It’s an incredibly relaxing experience.

Using these tabs offers numerous benefits for my skin:

  • Reduces the appearance of pores
  • Deep cleanses the skin
  • Minimizes inflammation
  • Gently soothes troubled skin
  • Speeds up the healing process of pimples

It’s a simple yet effective self-care routine to kick off the new year with a fresh start.

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup citric acid
  • 20 drops tea tree essential oil (melaleuca)
  • 2-3 tablespoons witch hazel
  • Mini spray bottle
  • Mini silicone mold (2 Tbsp size works best)
  • Bowl and spoon
  • Jar or container for storing finished facial tabs
  • Free printable label

Instructions for Making Acne Facial Tabs

Yield: 15-20 tea tree facial tabs (each about 2 tablespoons in size)

Step 1:

Combine 1 cup of baking soda and 1/2 cup of citric acid in a bowl. Mix thoroughly and use a spoon to break up any clumps.

Step 2:

Add 20 drops of tea tree (melaleuca) essential oil to the bowl, mixing well to ensure the essential oil is fully incorporated into the dry ingredients.

Step 3:

Add 2-3 tablespoons of witch hazel. Start with 2 tablespoons, then assess if you need to add more. If the mixture is too wet, incorporate additional baking soda and citric acid to balance it out. If it’s too dry, add a bit more witch hazel until you achieve the desired consistency, which should resemble damp (but not wet) sand.

Tip: Similar to bath bombs, the reaction between baking soda and citric acid produces fizz. To minimize premature bubbling, use a spray bottle to add the witch hazel.

Step 4:

Transfer the mixture into silicone molds. I particularly enjoy using a flower-shaped mold, but any silicone mold will do. An ice cube-sized mold (about 2 tablespoons) is ideal.

Tip: Press firmly with the back of a spoon or your fingers to ensure the tabs hold together once dry. If the mixture is too loose, it may crumble when removed from the molds.

Step 5:

Allow the tabs to dry completely before removing them from the molds. Depending on the humidity in your home, this could take a few hours or even a few days. If you live in a particularly humid environment, consider running a dehumidifier to help expedite the drying process. Once fully dry, they should pop out of the molds easily.

Step 6 (Optional):

Print out the free printable label and attach it to a decorative jar for a charming presentation.

How to Use Your Acne Facial Tabs

  1. Start with a clean face – I recommend using my homemade face wash (recipe available on my website).
  2. Place 1-2 acne facial tabs into a wooden, glass, or ceramic bowl.
  3. Pour hot, steamy water over the tabs.
  4. Close your eyes to avoid steam or essential oils getting in them.
  5. Use a soft towel to create a tent over your head and the bowl, trapping the steam inside.
  6. Position your face over the steam for a few minutes to open and cleanse your pores. If you start feeling too hot or uncomfortable, simply lift the towel and turn your head away for a breather. When you’re ready, return to the steam and enjoy the relaxation.
  7. Once finished, use a clean towel to gently dry your face.
  8. Follow up with toner (find my recipe on my site).
  9. Finish with a face serum to lock in moisture (recipe also available).
