Why You’ll Love This Homemade Fabric Softener
If you’re passionate about creating your own laundry supplies, this homemade fabric softener is a delightful addition to your collection. Alongside my DIY liquid laundry detergent and organic dryer balls, I take pride in knowing that the products I use to wash my family’s clothes are not only effective but also made from all-natural ingredients.
- It’s natural and non-toxic, ensuring that you avoid the harsh chemicals commonly found in most commercial fabric softeners.
- Not only does it soften your laundry, but it also enhances the cleaning power, removing any leftover residues left by soaps and detergents.
- Unlike store-bought alternatives, this DIY solution does not create a surface coating on fabrics. This makes it ideal for towels, leaving them soft and fluffy while maintaining their thick, absorbent qualities.
- It effectively reduces static cling, keeping your clothes looking neat and tidy.
- And of course, it provides a delightful fragrance that will leave your laundry smelling fresh!
How to Make Natural Fabric Softener
Step 1: Fill a Quart-Size Container with Vinegar
Tip: Ensure you use a jar or bottle that is safe for essential oils. Glass, stainless steel, and certain plastics (like #1 PET or #2 HDPE) are excellent choices.
Tip: I recommend using a quart-size container for this recipe, but feel free to scale it according to your needs. For a double batch, use 2 quarts (8 cups) of vinegar; for a half batch, simply use 2 cups (pint) of vinegar.
Tip: I love incorporating vinegar into my laundry and cleaning routines. If you share my enthusiasm for natural cleaning solutions, consider purchasing a large bottle of white vinegar from Costco—it’s economical, eco-friendly, and highly effective! Here are a few other homemade cleaning recipes that harness the power of vinegar: Trash Can Deodorizer Spray, Stainless Steel Polish, Dusting Spray, Anti-Mold & Mildew Spray, Homemade Shower Cleaner, Kitchen & Bathroom Cleaning Wipes, and Streak-Free Window & Glass Cleaner.
Step 2: Add 10-15 Drops of Essential Oil
Tip: Choose an essential oil with a scent that you adore. Popular options include lavender, lemon, orange, lemongrass, and eucalyptus.
Tip: Feel free to blend several essential oils to create a unique fragrance. Some combinations my family enjoys include:
- 10 drops lemon + 5 drops lavender
- 6 drops lavender + 6 drops lime + 2 drops spearmint
- 5 drops cypress + 4 drops tangerine + 2 drops lime + 2 drops bergamot
- 10 drops lemon + 2 drops basil + 3 drops spearmint
- 7 drops eucalyptus + 7 drops spearmint
- 5 drops orange + 5 drops bergamot + 5 drops lemon
Step 3: Stir to Mix Well and Label Your Bottle/Jar
Tip: I print the label on standard printer paper and attach it to the bottle using packing tape, ensuring durability and waterproofing. Alternatively, you can print on full-sheet label paper.
Tip: Before applying the label, wipe the bottle with rubbing alcohol to ensure it’s clean, allowing for better adhesion of the label.
