I love having a clean shower, but like most people, I dislike spending time scrubbing and cleaning it. That’s why I developed my own homemade shower cleaner and soap scum remover. It’s truly effective! Using essential oils and other natural ingredients, it leaves my shower spotless, makes glass shower doors sparkle, and keeps faucets shining. However, I often wonder, what can I do in between deep cleanings to maintain that fresh look? In the past, before I discovered the wonders of essential oils and DIY cleaning, I relied on Scrubbing Bubbles Daily Soap Scum & Mildew Stain Remover. While it worked effectively, the EWG rated it an F, which no longer aligns with my values. Now that I’m more informed, I strictly use natural, non-toxic cleaners in my home. After much research, reading, and experimentation, I created a homemade non-toxic daily shower cleaner that rivals Scrubbing Bubbles but is free from harmful chemicals. The result is a natural daily shower cleaning spray that genuinely works! Just spray it on your tub, shower doors, and walls after each shower, and it will keep your shower looking pristine for a week (or even longer).

-
Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide serves as a powerful disinfectant, sanitizer, and deodorizer. It enhances the cleaning capabilities of other ingredients, such as soap. I frequently use hydrogen peroxide in my toilet cleaning fizzies, as a homemade bleach alternative, and to brighten grout. It’s a robust yet gentle natural cleaner.
-
Rubbing Alcohol
Rubbing alcohol acts as a solvent that dissolves dirt, oil, soap scum, and grime in your shower. It also provides disinfecting properties. Additionally, it helps achieve a brilliant shine on glass, porcelain, stainless steel, chrome, and tile. Thanks to rubbing alcohol, your glass shower doors will dazzle, your shower tiles will gleam, and your faucets will shine.
-
Distilled Water
Distilled water is essential for diluting and thinning the mixture, making it easier to spray and cover a larger area. Using distilled water (or boiled and cooled filtered water) ensures that your shower cleaner remains fresh longer.
-
Sal Suds
Sal Suds is a gentle yet effective soap that cleans powerfully. It works well in both hard and soft water and rinses away easily. This incredible ingredient in my homemade shower spray effectively eliminates soap scum and buildup on shower doors, walls, and floors.
-
White Vinegar
Vinegar is an excellent natural cleaner that disinfects, deodorizes, and cuts through dirt, grease, and grime effortlessly. Most importantly, vinegar is a natural acid that kills most mold spores, making it a crucial component of this daily shower cleaner.
-
Tea Tree Essential Oil
Tea tree essential oil is a potent antifungal that combats mold and mildew while helping to prevent future regrowth.
How to Create Your Non-Toxic Daily Shower Cleaning Spray
Step 1: Pour 1 cup of distilled water into a 12-ounce or larger spray bottle
Tip: Opt for a spray bottle made from materials compatible with essential oils. Suitable options include glass, stainless steel, or specific plastics (such as PET plastic #1 or HDPE plastic #2). Tip: If distilled water isn’t available, boiled and cooled filtered water will work. Tip: Use a funnel to avoid spills when pouring water into the bottle.
Step 2: Add 1/8 cup of hydrogen peroxide
Step 3: Incorporate 1/8 cup of rubbing alcohol
Tip: Rubbing alcohol is also commonly referred to as 99.9% isopropyl alcohol. Tip: If rubbing alcohol is unavailable, vodka or Everclear can be used as substitutes.
Step 4: Mix in 1/2 teaspoon of Sal Suds or dish soap
Step 5: Add 1 teaspoon of white vinegar
Step 6: Include 20 drops of tea tree essential oil
Tip: Tea tree essential oil is sometimes labeled as melaleuca essential oil.
Step 7 (Optional): Add a label – click here for a free printable label
- Cut it out.
- I use packing tape to affix the label to the bottle. It’s cost-effective, adheres well, and keeps the label protected from moisture and dirt.
How to Use Your Daily Shower Cleaner
- It may sound amusing, but daily shower cleaners perform best when you start with a clean shower. For optimal results, ensure you clean your shower before utilizing this spray to maintain its cleanliness. Use my homemade shower cleaner (recipe here) to deep clean your shower about once a week or a couple of times each month. Then, apply the daily shower cleaner to keep your tub and shower clean in between deep cleans.
- Shake the bottle well before each use.
- After every shower, spray down the shower doors and walls.
- No scrubbing, wiping, or rinsing is necessary. This daily cleaner does all the heavy lifting. A quick spray of this homemade solution after your shower will help keep soap buildup and mildew at bay.
