Ingredients You’ll Need

2 cups distilled water

Tip: If you don’t have distilled water on hand, boiled and cooled filtered water works as an effective substitute.

1 teaspoon baking soda

Baking soda serves dual purposes: it enhances the deodorizing capacity and provides mild abrasive action to help lift stubborn grease and grime.

1 teaspoon unscented liquid Castile soap (or a natural dish soap substitute)

Castile soap is a powerful degreaser that helps dissolve dirt and rinse it away. Just remember, moderation is key; one teaspoon is sufficient to avoid any soapy residue.

30 drops of essential oil

You can choose any essential oil that appeals to you or follow my festive recipes for Christmas Tree, Candy Cane, Merry & Bright, and Christmas Cookies blends to infuse your cleaner with delightful scents.

Instructions for Creating Your All-Purpose Cleaner with Holiday Scents

This DIY project is a breeze and takes under a minute!

Step 1: Add 1 teaspoon of baking soda to a 16 oz spray bottle

Tip: Opt for a spray bottle made from materials safe for diluted essential oils. Glass, stainless steel, or specific plastics (like HDPE #2 or PET #1) are excellent choices. Tip: Utilize a funnel to easily transfer the baking soda without spills. No need to fret about any leftover baking soda; the water will wash it into the bottle in the next step.

Step 2: Pour 2 cups of distilled water into the bottle

Tip: Boiled and cooled filtered water can be used instead of distilled water.

Step 3: Secure the top and shake to thoroughly dissolve the baking soda

Step 4: Remove the top and add 1 teaspoon of unscented liquid Castile soap (or a natural dish soap)

Tip: Stick to one teaspoon to prevent any soapy residue. It’s crucial to add the ingredients in this order to avoid creating a foamy mess!

Step 5: Add 30 drops of essential oil

Here are four delightful Christmas essential oil blends to consider for your all-purpose cleaner:

  • Christmas Tree: 10 drops fir essential oil, 10 drops spruce essential oil, 5 drops cypress essential oil, 5 drops cedarwood essential oil
  • Christmas Cookies: 15 drops vanilla oleoresin, 7 drops sweet orange, 3 drops ginger essential oil, 3 drops cinnamon essential oil, 2 drops clove essential oil
  • Candy Cane: 18 drops peppermint essential oil, 12 drops vanilla oleoresin
  • Merry & Bright: 14 drops fir, 8 drops grapefruit essential oil, 8 drops frankincense essential oil

Step 6: Swirl gently to mix the ingredients

Step 7 (optional): Create a label (click here for a free printable label)

Tip: Print your label on full-sheet label paper, or use regular printer paper and secure it to the spray bottle with packing tape. This method is economical and effective, ensuring your labels remain intact and look great over time.

How to Use Your DIY Cleaner

  • Always perform a spot test on a hidden area before applying it to larger surfaces.
  • Gently shake the spray bottle before each use.
  • Spray directly onto the surface or onto a microfiber cloth.
  • If a surface is particularly dirty, allow the cleaner to sit for one to two minutes before wiping clean.
  • For tough, stuck-on grime, sprinkle baking soda on the surface before spraying with the cleaner, then scrub and wipe clean.
