I absolutely cherish my home and my family. However, with a teenager, a lively dog, and my husband around, it doesn’t always have the freshest scent. I’ve experimented with various commercial deodorizers to mask the occasional unpleasant odors and even tried using scented garbage bags to combat kitchen smells, but all I ended up with was a house that smelled like a chemical factory.
Thankfully, essential oils have once again proven to be a game-changer. By using a simple pack of self-stick adhesive felt pads and adding a few drops of essential oils to them, I’ve created all-natural, non-toxic essential oil deodorizers that can be used throughout my home!
In just a matter of minutes, I can whip up a variety of deodorizers to place in shoe bins, trash cans, closets, drawers, and anywhere else that might harbor an unwelcome odor.

Step 3: Stick the Felt Pads in Deodorizing Spots
Tip: Here are just a few of the areas you might want to try:
- Trash cans
- Pantry
- Kitchen drawers
- Clothes drawers
- Shoe bins
- Closets
- Recycling bins
- Cupboards
- Totes with seasonal holiday decorations
- Laundry hamper
Tip: The scent from the essential oils should last several days or longer. When the fragrance begins to fade, simply add a few more drops of essential oil to the felt pad. If the felt pad is placed on a vertical surface, consider placing a tissue beneath it to catch any drips. If you notice any drips on the tissue, you can place it in a drawer or bin to help scent and deodorize that space. As my grandma used to say, “Waste not, want not.”
