Transforming My Skincare Routine: The Power of Makeup Removal

Over the past few years, I’ve discovered a significant improvement in my skin by adopting a simple yet effective practice: removing my makeup before washing my face. It was actually my teenage daughter who introduced me to this concept. Initially, I found it quite perplexing. For decades, my routine had been straightforward—washing my face with cleanser. Why complicate things by removing makeup first? It felt unnecessary and like twice the effort at a time when I was often exhausted, yearning to crawl into bed and get as much rest as possible before the morning alarm sounded. However, curiosity got the better of me, and I decided to give it a try.

I began using a makeup remover to eliminate makeup before my regular cleansing routine, and it turned out to be a complete game changer! Not only did this approach make the washing process quicker and easier, but my skin also responded remarkably well. I noticed a significant reduction in the appearance of my pores, less redness, a more even skin tone, and a decrease in breakouts. It was astonishing how such a minor adjustment—taking less than a minute—could yield such impressive results.

  • Unscented Liquid Castile Soap

Castile soap is derived from simple plant oils and is renowned for being gentle and safe, even for sensitive skin. It effectively removes makeup without stripping the skin of its natural moisture.

  • Shea Oil

While many are familiar with shea butter used in body butters and skincare DIYs, shea oil is derived from the same African karite tree nut. Its lighter consistency makes it a perfect choice for this recipe. Rich in oleic and stearic essential fatty acids, shea oil acts as a superfood for your face. As an oil, it effortlessly dissolves makeup without the drying effect often associated with many facial cleansers.

  • Witch Hazel

This natural astringent minimizes the appearance of pores, alleviates inflammation and skin irritations, reduces oiliness and redness, and leaves the skin feeling clean and refreshed.

  • Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender is known for its calming and soothing properties, helping to reduce redness while providing potent antioxidants that promote healthy skin.

  • Tea Tree Essential Oil (Melaleuca)

Tea tree oil penetrates deep into the pores to unblock sebaceous glands, eliminate bacteria, and reduce inflammation. It is effective in drying out blemishes, including pimples, whiteheads, and blackheads.

  • Frankincense Essential Oil

This essential oil enhances skin tone, promotes new cell growth, and improves elasticity, making it a valuable addition to skincare.

  • Distilled Water

Water is essential for diluting the mixture of Castile soap and oil. This dilution has two main advantages: it allows the mixture to be more easily absorbed by the cotton rounds used for the wipes, and it helps reduce the cost of making them by requiring less soap and oil.

  • Organic Cotton Rounds

  • 8 oz Glass Jar

How to Create Your Own Makeup Remover Wipes

Step 1: Add 2 teaspoons of unscented liquid Castile soap to an 8 oz jar.

Step 2: Incorporate 2 teaspoons of witch hazel.

Step 3: Add 3 to 4 tablespoons of shea oil.

Note: Ensure you are using shea OIL, not shea BUTTER. Shea oil’s thinner consistency is crucial for proper mixing with the other ingredients.

Step 4: Add the following essential oils:

  • 5 drops of lavender essential oil
  • 5 drops of tea tree essential oil
  • 3 drops of frankincense essential oil

Step 5: Pour in 1/4 cup of distilled water and stir well.

Note: The jar should be about halfway full at this point to leave sufficient space for the cotton rounds.

Step 6: Add 15-20 cotton rounds to the jar, secure the lid, and shake gently. This will help evenly distribute the liquid across the cotton rounds.

Step 7: Label your jar (Get your free printable label here).

Tip: You can print the label on full-sheet label paper, or like I do, print it on regular printer paper and affix it to the jar with packing tape. This method is cost-effective and ensures the label adheres better and lasts longer. For optimal adhesion, wipe the jar with a little rubbing alcohol before applying the label, allowing it to dry first.

How to Use Your Makeup Remover Wipes

  1. Take one makeup remover pad at a time. Gently wipe upwards, using as many pads as necessary to completely remove all makeup. Typically, I use 2-3 pads each night. Dispose of the used pads in the trash.
  2. After makeup removal, cleanse your face with my homemade foaming face wash. (Here’s my recipe – there are versions for nearly every skin type – oily, sensitive, acne-prone, dry, mature, normal)
  3. Apply this gentle homemade toner (recipe here). Use a gentle upward motion all over your face (avoiding the eye area) – shake the toner bottle well before each use.
  4. Finish off by moisturizing your skin with my DIY face serum. (Here’s the recipe – much like my foaming face wash, there are customized recipes for carrier oil and essential oil blends tailored to your specific skin type, be it dry, oily, acne-prone, mature, or sensitive).
